Another Quake Hits Khonj, Fars Province

SHIRAZ, Fars Province Another earthquake measuring 4.8 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale hit the city of Khonj in Larestan district in southern Fars Province at 19:26 hours local time (15:56 hours GMT) Saturday. The Seismological Base of the provincial capital of Shiraz, affiliated to Geophysics Center of Tehran University, registered the epicenter of the quake 230 km south of the base.
According to the reports, the quake caused no damage or injury. The base has registered 10 aftershocks with the intensity of less than four degrees in the district in the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, Abutaleb Rouina, the governor of Khonj told IRNA yesterday that survivors of the Friday quake in Khonj and its vicinity are still in need of tents and heaters.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 degrees on the Richter scale shook Khonj, located 275 km south of Shiraz, at 16:33 hours local time on Friday. Rouina added that a large number of people whose houses have been damaged, were forced to stay outdoors overnight in fear of fresh quakes. He said that the city of Khonj has been damaged by 10 percent while its surrounding villages including Bighard, Hosseinabad, Akbarabad, Sadeh and Dehno have been damaged between 30-70 percent.
Some 800 tents have been distributed among the survivors in the past two days and relief operations continue in the region, Rouina added. Schools of Khonj which have been damaged in the quake remain closed, he said. (IRNA)
